Metrowater has made over $90 million in profit in ten years from 1997-2007
$26 million plus of this has been paid by Metrowater to Auckland City Council as “Charitable Payments” in a big Money-go-Round.
Parliament is currently investigating Metrowater’s price increases for ‘User Charges.
Metrowater is being used as a Ca$h Cow to $ub$idise rates.
This has been done behind the public’s back in ‘confidential’ council meetings!
This means that an average 8 person family (to quote Metrowater’s letter) will use more water and will therefore pay over $500 every three months, that is over $2000 a year!
This violates our basic human right to affordable water, because it disproportionately burdens poorer families.
Metrowater’s ‘User Charges’ do not encourage water conservation.
Metrowater themselves have been losing or wasting more water than
ever before.
1997 - 98 unaccounted for water was 13.3% (6,374,135 m3)
2006 - 07 unaccounted for water ‘peaked’ at 17.7% (9,197,976+ m3)
“The profit making model used by Metrowater does not encourage water conservation.”
65% of water in your household does not need to be drinking water quality!
You do not need drinking quality water to flush your toilet or wash your clothes.
Metrowater a 100% owned ‘Council Controlled Organisation’ (CCO)
Metrowater provides no incentives for households to retrofit water-tanks to your property to encourage genuine water conservation measures.
WHY? “ because they would lose money.”
